Individuals
Genomes in GENOTURK belong to an "individual" - a person or sample you study. This guide explains how to create and manage individuals, from your default "You" profile to extra samples.
What is an individual?
An individual represents a person or a sample whose DNA you are analysing. Every genome you upload is linked to exactly one individual, allowing GENOTURK to compare DNA from the same person across different samples and point out meaningful sequence differences.
Each individual also stores basic metadata such as the species (taxon) and, optionally, the born at, which appears alongside its genome and cancer candidates.
Your primary "You" individual
When you create your account, GENOTURK automatically creates a primary individual for you (labelled "You"). This is the default target for species-resolution and uploads and cannot be deleted. You can still create as many additional individuals as you need.
Creating an individual
You can create a new individual at any time. When creating one you provide:
- Name - a label that helps you recognise the sample
- Taxon - the species, looked up automatically from the NCBI taxonomy
- Born At - optional, defaults to the moment the individual is created
Where to create individuals
Managing individuals
Open Settings and scroll to the Individuals card to see every individual associated with your account, including how many genomes and cancer candidates belong to each one, when it was created, and a delete button for that individual.
Deleting an individual
Deleting an individual is permanent and cascades through everything attached to it: its genomes, sequencing reads (including the files on cloud storage), alignments, alignment comments, and cancer candidates are all removed.
